Candy and Snacks FAQ
What is freeze drying?
Freeze drying (also called lyophilization) is a process that removes moisture from food by freezing it and then using a vacuum to turn ice directly into vapor. This preserves flavor, structure, and shelf life while creating a light, crunchy texture.
Does freeze drying preserve nutrients?
Yes — better than almost any other preservation method.
Freeze drying removes moisture without using heat, which helps retain vitamins, minerals, and natural flavors. Foods like fruits and vegetables typically keep 85–95% of their original nutrients.
Does freeze drying make food healthier?
Not necessarily, freeze drying preserves the nutrition that’s already there.
It doesn’t add nutrients or remove sugar, fat, or calories. A freeze-dried strawberry has the same nutrients as a fresh one — just with the water removed.
Is freeze-dried food the same as dehydrated food?
No.
Dehydration uses heat, shrinking the food and can destroy certain vitamins.
Freeze drying uses low temperatures and a vacuum, so shape generally remains and nutrient loss is significantly less.
Can you rehydrate freeze-dried foods?
Yes.....but one certain foods are meant to be rehydrated. Candies will not return to their original form and not meant for rehydration.
Water easily absorbs back into foods like salsa, fruits, vegetables, soups, and even cooked meals. Textures may change but nutrition remains comparable to fresh.
Why does freeze-dried food taste stronger?
Removing moisture makes flavors more concentrated. You’re tasting the food without the dilution or stickiness — just pure, crispy flavor.
Is candy actually freeze dried?
Not technically, candy isn’t “frozen” before moisture is removed.
Candies don’t contain enough water to undergo true freeze drying, so the process is closer to pressure expansion. When exposed to the vacuum, the candy puffs, cracks, or expands, giving that airy crunch people associate with freeze-dried snacks.
How does freeze drying affect shelf life?
Removing water dramatically extends shelf life by preventing mold, bacteria, and spoilage.
Candy can last about a year; fruits and veggies can last even longer when sealed properly.
Does freeze drying add any chemicals or preservatives?
No. Freeze drying itself is the preservative.
Most freeze-dried products contain only the original ingredients and nothing extra, unless flavorings or seasonings are intentionally added.
Pet Treat FAQ
Are freeze-dried pet treats safe for dogs and cats?
Yes. Single-ingredient freeze-dried fruits and vegetables are generally safe for most pets, as long as the ingredient itself is pet-friendly or no pet specific allergies. No additives, seasonings, or preservatives means they’re easy to digest and great for pets with sensitivities.
Can I give my pet too many freeze-dried treats at once?
Yes. Even though our freeze-dried pet treats are made from simple fruits and vegetables, they’re still concentrated foods with the water removed. This means pets can consume more volume than they would with fresh ingredients, which may lead to: upset stomach, loose stool, gas or bloating. extra calories (even from healthy foods).
We recommend starting slow and offering only a few pieces at a time, especially for small pets or pets new to freeze-dried foods. Treats should make up no more than 10% of your pet’s daily diet unless recommended by your veterinarian.
If your pet has a sensitive stomach, rehydrating the treats with a splash of warm water can make them easier to digest.
Do freeze-dried pet treats keep their nutrients?
Mostly, yes. Freeze drying preserves the majority of vitamins, minerals, and natural plant compounds — far more than baking or dehydrating. Your pet gets the nutritional benefits of the original ingredient.
Are SweetFreeze pet treats raw?
Yes. Our pet treats are raw, single-ingredient fruits and vegetables that are freeze-dried to remove moisture. This keeps the ingredient in its most natural state while delivering a crunchy texture pets love.
Can freeze-dried treats be rehydrated?
Yes. You can soften them with warm water to make them gentler on sensitive teeth or easier for older pets to chew. Rehydration only takes a few seconds.
Can freeze-dried treats replace a meal?
No. Freeze-dried fruits and veggies are treats — not complete nutrition.
They’re ideal for training rewards, enrichment, puzzle toys, or adding a crunchy topper to meals.
How long do freeze-dried pet treats last?
Once sealed, they stay fresh for months.
After opening, keep them in a cool, dry place and reseal tightly. Moisture causes freeze-dried treats to lose crunch and spoil faster.
